Nestled on a hillside with sweeping views of Oregon’s iconic peak, Three Courtyards is a modern residence designed around three lush internal courtyards. Each garden draws daylight deep into the plan, offering moments of calm and year-round connection to nature while providing privacy and shelter from the elements.

From the entry, sightlines stretch through layered outdoor rooms to the mountain beyond. Sliding glass walls dissolve boundaries, allowing living spaces to expand effortlessly into terraces and planting beds. The courtyards act as natural light wells, framing seasonal changes and creating an ever-shifting play of sun and shadow across polished concrete and warm wood interiors.

At the heart of the home, a raised great room anchors the layout. Its vaulted ceiling is carefully sculpted to capture Mount Hood’s panorama while flooding the space with soft, indirect light through all seasons. The heightened volume gives the room a sense of quiet grandeur, balancing openness with comfort, and enhancing the drama of the surrounding landscape.

Materials are chosen for longevity and tactile appeal: cedar siding weathering to silver, slender steel accents, and custom cabinetry in sustainably harvested hardwoods. Every element is detailed for simplicity and durability, allowing the architecture to recede behind the experience of light, air, and view.

The three courtyards each express a distinct mood. One is planted as a contemplative garden for morning coffee; another offers a protected dining patio for summer evenings; the third, centered on native plantings, becomes a private retreat visible from bedrooms and baths. Together, they shape a sequence of indoor-outdoor rooms, encouraging a lifestyle attuned to the rhythms of the site.

Energy performance is quietly embedded in the design. Deep overhangs and high-performance glazing temper sun and wind, while the home’s orientation maximizes passive light and mountain vistas without compromising comfort. Mechanical systems are efficient and discreet, allowing the architecture to foreground its connection to the land.

Three Courtyards is more than a house: it is a composed landscape of walls, glass, and garden, orchestrated to celebrate its dramatic setting. By pairing timeless materials with thoughtful spatial choreography, the home offers a serene retreat that honors its mountain backdrop while providing spaces for gathering, reflection, and everyday life.

Nestled in Portland’s historic Laurelhurst neighborhood, this project reimagines a steep front site while honoring the character of the existing home. The design integrates a series of interventions. A garage roof deck, terraced landscaping, garage interior improvements, an underground connection to the house, and a complete refresh of the front yard to create a seamless experience from street to entry.

Respect for the home’s traditional architecture guided every move. Clean, modern touches were introduced in balance with classic detailing, allowing the new work to feel both current and timeless. Concrete retaining walls, cast with crisp edges, anchor the terraced gardens and provide durable structure, while their soft gray tone complements the original stucco and trim. Broad steps and integrated landings lead visitors down through layered plantings toward the garage roof deck, creating a procession that feels natural yet sculpted.

Atop the garage, a sustainably harvested mahogany deck offers a warm, inviting platform for relaxation and entertaining. Its fine-grained surface contrasts beautifully with new steel and cedar fencing and a custom gate, which frame the deck while maintaining openness to the garden and street. Inside, the garage retains its function but benefits from subtle upgrades that support storage and workshop needs.

The result is a composition of traditional and modern elements. Timber, steel, concrete, and lush greenery that unites home, landscape, and street, enhancing daily life while respecting Laurelhurst’s enduring charm.

Set along Portland’s storied Alameda Ridge, this whole-house remodel reimagines a traditional home for modern living. At its heart is a stunning 20-foot, six-panel sliding glass door that opens the main living area to a new covered deck, creating a seamless indoor–outdoor connection that can be enjoyed in every season.

Inside, the home’s circulation was completely rethought. An updated entry sequence, reconfigured hallways, and reoriented rooms now draw focus toward sweeping views of downtown Portland, bringing light and landscape deeper into the interior. A new primary suite adds comfort and privacy, while two additional bedrooms were created through smart reconfiguration, all within the original footprint.

Sustainability was woven throughout the remodel. Upgraded insulation, high-performance windows and doors, and a rooftop solar array work together to create an energy-efficient home that provides for itself, blending classic neighborhood character with forward-thinking design.

Set into a steep, rocky hillside overlooking the Columbia River Gorge and Mosier Plateau, this residence is conceived as a direct response to its dramatic site. The building form draws inspiration from the angular geology and rugged terrain, with a plan that fractures and shifts to frame multiple view corridors. Each interior space is carefully oriented to capture a distinct perspective; whether toward the gorge, the plateau, or the distant mountains and countryside, reinforcing a constant connection between dwelling and landscape.

Expansive glazing opens the home to its surroundings on all elevations, while bold cantilevered volumes extend outward to echo the projecting cliffs. These gestures not only ground the architecture in its context but also allow occupants to experience the sensation of inhabiting the edge of the terrain.

The design takes advantage of the natural slope, presenting a restrained single-story profile at the street while revealing a transparent two-story façade facing the gorge. At just over 2,000 square feet, the program includes three bedrooms and two bathrooms, as well as a lower-level accessory dwelling unit designed to accommodate extended guests or provide supplemental income.

Thoughtfully detailed, this urban oasis blends relaxation, recreation, and sustainable landscape design into one harmonious retreat.

Located in Portland’s Waverly Heights neighborhood, this new garage was designed as a seamless extension of the existing midcentury modern home. The structure draws from the home’s original design language: clean lines, low-sloping roof forms, and a restrained material palette, ensuring that the addition feels both contemporary and timeless.

Natural wood siding and crisp detailing emphasize horizontal proportions, while large glazed openings bring light into the space and connect the garage to the surrounding landscape. Careful attention was given to scale and rhythm so that the garage complements the existing home rather than competing with it.

The result is a functional and flexible garage that enhances the daily life of the homeowners while preserving the architectural integrity of their midcentury modern residence.

Energy efficiency played a central role in the remodel. New high-performance windows and doors, comprehensive air sealing, and upgraded insulation dramatically improved comfort and performance. The roof structure was also prepared for a future solar installation, setting the stage for a low-energy, resilient home that honors its mid-century roots while looking toward the future.

Tucked among the fir trees off Portland’s Council Crest, the Glassman Residence is a reimagined mid-century modern retreat. Sasquatch Architecture led a whole-house remodel and addition with Wise Design that brings in more light, effortless circulation, and modern comfort while honoring the home’s timeless lines.

A new front addition welcomes guests and connects spaces with ease. The primary suite was redesigned to include a spa-like en-suite bath and walk-in shower, and throughout the house new windows and doors frame treetop views. In the kitchen, a bold redesign embraces the home’s atypical angle. Transforming a once-awkward layout into a striking focal point that opens the entire wing for cooking, gathering, and entertaining.

Inside, Wise Design curated a variety of warm wood finishes and built-ins, softening the clean architecture and giving each room a natural, inviting character. Below, a full basement was reimagined as a flexible entertainment level, extending the living space and creating room for friends and family to relax.

Blending vintage character with fresh materials and modern lines, the Glassman Residence celebrates its mid-century roots while offering a welcoming backdrop for contemporary living.

What the existing house lacked in efficiency, it more than made up for with its sweeping views of Haystack Rock and the Pacific Ocean. Initially considered a potential tear-down, the home was instead reimagined through a collaborative design/build effort with Clarkbuilt, Inc., preserving its presence while elevating its performance and livability.

The transformation involved a complete reconfiguration of the entry sequence and vertical circulation, relocating the kitchen to the main level, and extending the rear of the home by 12 feet. These moves opened the plan into a light-filled great room above, while creating ocean-facing bedrooms below—allowing the house to finally match the drama of its setting.

The original house began as a humble 1940s farmhouse serving a plum orchard in West Cully. Honoring that legacy, the remodel preserved the essential form while reimagining it for modern life. The steep roofline became the catalyst for transformation, unlocking the ability to add a second story without increasing the overall height.

At the heart of the design, a warm wood-clad volume was threaded through the center of the structure, creating a compelling dialogue between past and present. One half of the home now rises into two full stories, while the other opens into a vaulted great room that soars 20 feet high, flooded with daylight and offering an unexpected sense of volume rarely found in Portland’s tight urban fabric.

New windows and thoughtful openings draw light deep into the interior, creating bright, uplifting spaces throughout the day. Fully insulated and tightly sealed, the home operates at just 25% of the energy use of comparable residences while maintaining harmony with its neighborhood streetscape. Within a footprint of under 1,000 square feet, the design achieves the livability of a three-bedroom, two-bath home, proving that modern, light-filled living doesn’t require excess space.

The existing farm property included a large horse arena that had fallen out of use. The owners approached Sasquatch Architecture with the goal of transforming it into a vibrant multi-use venue. By infilling the open walls with locally sourced Douglas fir siding and installing a new roof, the once dilapidated structure was given new life—its original purpose nearly unrecognizable.

Inside, the vast steel framing was refinished and left exposed, creating a striking contrast with the warm new wood ceiling. A loft was introduced to provide a dramatic wedding entry and additional event space, while a full kitchen and supporting program were tucked below.

Framed by views of the surrounding hills, the building embraces openness and transparency, functioning as an indoor/outdoor venue that can host gatherings year-round. What was once a forgotten arena is now a centerpiece for community and celebration.

Along the north wall, integrated storage and a Murphy bed enable a seamless transformation from office to guest studio in seconds, making the compact footprint highly adaptable without compromise.

Located in the heart of the beautiful Historic Irvington neighborhood, the clients needed to expand their kitchen without competing with it’s existing beauty. Having to go through a local historic review, the neighborhood commission came together and agreed this addition not only was designed to seamlessly match the existing details of the home but enhanced it’s already great nature. Adding a sun filled breakfast nook and continuing the existing kitchen into the addition, this addition provides the user with useful space throughout the entire day inside the home. A new courtyard and covered patio were also a part of this project for the owners to enjoy with easy access from the addition throughout all four seasons.
